Abstract
Pulmonary function studies were made in twenty five cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema and in fourteen cases of chronic cor pulmonale secondary to the former. The results were comparedto elucidate the pathophysiological characteristics of each group.
Oxygen consumption, minute Irentilation, resting ventilation equivalent, vital capacity, maximal breathing capacity, timed vital capacity capacity ratio, and air velocity index were smaller in col pulmonale than in pulmonary emphysema.
Ventilation equivalent during exercise , Leslie index ,ari trapping index, index of intrapulmonary mixing were greater in cor pulmonale than in pulmonary emphysema but oxygen diffusion showed no sinifitant difference between the two groups.
Differences in the various pulmonary functions between pulmonary emphysema and cor puImonale were hought to be due largely to the difference in the degree of pulmonary emphysema rather than the presence or absence of right heart failure.
